Making Assertive Statements

Assuming they receive any training at all, my belief is car salespeople are taught to “talk up” the car a potential customer is interested in, making such statements as, “She’s a beauty” or “You look like you belong in this car.” There’s probably some psychology behind it, like they are reaffirming the things you want to believe. Insincere as they may be, they are moving you towards a close by uttering these assertive statements.

When applied correctly “and sincerely”, assertive statements can help you, too. Consider the following words leaving your lips:
• “You should give us a try. We are amazing.”
• “Our customer loyalty rate is off the charts. You’ll see.”
• “We didn’t invent print. We perfected it.”

It’s easy to get caught up in the enthusiasm of someone who is excited. So, get excited. You work for the best company. You work in a great industry. You love what you do. If those three things aren’t true, make a change.

But if they are, get assertive.
