How to Get Your Point Across in Written Form

Are your customers excited to hear from you? When an email pops up in their inbox, do they rush to open it or roll their eyes? You'll do a better job at getting your point across in writing after reading Bill Farquharson's blog (which you are hopefully excited to read).

Salespeople are communicators…the good ones, anyway. Our job is to speak so people will listen and listen so people will speak, and not necessarily in that order. Some think, then talk. Others think while talking. The former use an economy of words while the latter say, “Long story short” a lot, but then never deliver on that promise. Most will tell you they prefer talking over writing. A terrific orator is not automatically effective with a keyboard. Effective writing is an art and there’s a way to get your point across, such as:

  • Have something of value to say.
  • Write with confidence and humility.
  • Make no assumptions.
  • Don’t use 100 words when 10 will do.
  • Let your writing reflect your personality.
  • Be your authentic self.
  • Leave lots of white space.
  • Be careful with what you commit to writing, especially online.
  • Make it seem like a quick read.
  • Use bullet points.

And then stick the landing, like this:

The written word is a powerful medium. Treat it with respect. Your goal should be that when someone sees an email or post from you, they are excited to read it.
