A Little-Known LinkedIn Fail

Do you see the same people over and over again in your LinkedIn feed and wondered why that is? LinkedIn favors some members over others and its rule book both rewards and punishes. In his blog this week. Bill Farquharson shows you how to remove one factor that might be dragging you down.

The days between Christmas and New Year’s Day were unusually active last week…. on LinkedIn, that is. I was surprised and impressed.

You would think it would have been dead, but I found it to be just the opposite. I guess that proves two things:

  1. As last week’s blog pointed out, make no assumptions, and…
  2. There is no bad time to make a connection request or place a post on LinkedIn. Seems that even people who are out of the office or even on vacation just can’t seem to give it a break.

Have you noticed and wondered why some users get more attention than others? That is, are you seeing some names (including, hopefully, mine!) popping up in your feed a lot? Well, there is a reason for that: Their high connection count and activity level is rewarded by LinkedIn. And the opposite is also true.

Think of it as a credit score. Stay active, get promoted. Go dormant, you’re ignored.

But there is another element of this “LinkedIn score” you should know about since you might unknowingly be getting punished.

LinkedIn keeps track of unanswered connection requests. If you have too many that sit unanswered too long, your LinkedIn score suffers and your post receive less mention in other peoples’ feeds. That makes it important to clear the board from time to time.

Here’s how:

1. Click the My Network icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage;
2. If you have no invitations, click Manage next to No pending invitations.
3. Click the Sent tab under Manage invitations;
4. Click Withdraw next to a recipient’s name.
5. In the pop-up that appears, confirm your decision.

It’s a small thing, but we need to know every angle to find marketing success.
