Good morning!
Of all the things that I do in this crazy job that I’ve created, it’s the one on one coaching that I love the best. This is most true when I’m working with new salespeople. What an opportunity this gives me! It’s as if I have a DeLorean and I can ramp it up to 88 mph, go back in time, and visit a young Bill Farquharson to deliver information I wish that young putz had.
Recently, I received a phone call from an 88-year-old reader from Florida. This guy was still out there killing it despite his body and mind working against him sometimes. One of the things he told me was a message that I deliver to the newbie:
Become a student of sales.
The next time you sit down at a restaurant, pay attention to the waiter/waitress. They are in sales. The person who takes your coffee order is in sales. The gate agent on the next flight you take? Sales. Your teenager desperately in need of:
- Your car
- Your money
- Your ignorance
- <<insert endless request list here>>
Salespeople, each and every one of them.
By remaining a student of sales, you recognize the fact that everyone has a piece to the puzzle. You can learn something from that waiter, that barista, that gate agent, the teenager. Pay attention and realize that there is no finish line to this job.
Stay thirsty, my friends.
