In July, I played in a big-deal golf tournament in Saint Louis. Didn’t win, but no one had more fun than me.
As such, I hit my goal.
Back in April, I asked my UK-based son-in-law if he’d like to work on a new time management project with me. My goal was nothing beyond getting to know him better. Even if it never makes a penny, I’ve already won.
When you’re first starting out in sales, there’s a lot of frustration. Much of the time you can feel like a total failure. Call after call after call after email after email and nothing to show for it.
But what if your goal wasn’t to make a sale or even get an appointment? What if your goal was to make mistakes and learn from them? What if your goal was to make more sales call attempts than you did yesterday? What if your goal was to come up with five different e-mail subject lines to see if you could find one that worked?
Setting the right goals changes your definition of success. In sales, a client can hear every emotion you are having. Choose the wrong goals and they will hear failure.
Choose the right goals and you have opportunity and excitement and growth and improvement in your voice.
And that will affect the outcome.
