I looked at a piece of paper containing 5 different combinations of 12 notes in a specific order. They are called, Pentatonic Scales. Virtually every guitar solo on every song ever made follows these patterns.
I was instructed to memorize them and thought, “I can’t. No way. That’s ridiculous.”
In time, with a lot of practice and repetition, I no longer can’t. I can. Easily, in fact.
Then the goalposts moved.
I was handed a piece of paper containing 7 different combinations of 18 notes in a specific order. They are called Major (or Diatonic) Scales. Again, I was instructed to memorize them.
I laughed like a madman and thought, “I can’t. No way. You’re crazy. What was I thinking? I can’t do this!”
I seriously considered giving up and stopping any further improvement.
Now, in time, and with a L-O-T of practice and repetition, I no longer can’t. I can, in fact. Not perfectly, but I can.
The other day at my guitar lesson, I told my instructor, “I will no longer say, ‘I can’t.’ Instead, I will say, ‘I haven’t yet, but I will.’”
You are being asked to grow your sales volume. But there are challenges:
No one answers the phone;
No one returns a call;
You aren’t sure whom to call;
You are full of self-doubt.
Day after day, week after week, you are struggling to keep at it. You want to quit.
Unrewarded effort leaves you thinking, “I can’t.”
But you persevere. You put in the time. You make the calls. You run the play.
You and I have similar challenges. We have a seemingly insurmountable task. We are at the base of a mountain looking straight up, laughing maniacally, thinking, “I can’t.”
Change your thinking. You can. You just haven’t yet.
