Recently, I came across an interesting argument/opinion: We get no more than 1 to 3 hours of deep focus time each day. That is, our ability to truly get our heads into a project or task and achieve a significant level of concentration is not limitless. We get 1-3 hours at best.
I read that concept and let it sit for a while, observing my activity for a few days. Come to find out, it’s absolutely correct! I can get a LOT done, but there is a difference between checking boxes, accomplishing tasks, and crafting high quality work.
Knowing this has affected my time management in two ways:
- Every day, I specifically plan how I will use my 1 to 3 hours, and
- I lower my expectations for the hours that follow by attempting tasks which don’t require deep concentration.
The result has been noticeable. Simply by planning ahead, I have made far better use of time.
Try it. Think about tomorrow and review your task list. Which activity would most benefit from a chunk of deep focus time? Next, block it out on your calendar to make sure you get to it.
I am fairly certain this tip works for all ages. At 62, I admit I don’t have the work stamina I once did, but I truly believe it to be impossible to maintain a high level of quality work all day long.
The ultimate goal in all of this is to work less and sell more. This is another step in that direction.
