Climbing Out of the Sales Slump

It's coming. It's going to happen to you. A lot. You will need a strategy. The "It" in this equation is a sales slump. The strategy is what Bill Farquharson has in mind in this week's blog.

I’m an optimist. I wear a smile more often than not, despite my habitually erratic golf game. But hey—I’m a salesperson too, and sales comes with slumps.

No one teaches this in Sales 101. There’s no TedTalk on “What to do when your Sales mojo disappears.” But trust me, we’ve all been there.

And so will you. A lot.

So, what do you do when the impossible highs turn into devastating lows?
Here’s my four-step reset plan:

  1. Take a break. Seriously. Step away. Whether it’s a few hours or a full day, give your brain (and heart) space to reset. Walk. Breathe. Unplug. Chill.
  2. Call your favorite customer. No pitch. Just check in. You’ll reconnect with your “why” and probably get a reminder that yes, you are good at this.
  3. Clean your workspace. I don’t know why this works, but it’s amazing how clearing clutter clears your mind. Toss what you don’t need and make a fresh to-do list as you go.
  4. Believe in sales math. If you do “X”—with consistency and heart—then “Y” will happen. Have faith in the process.


Sales is hard. Slumps are real. But you’re not alone, and you’re not done.

And when you bounce back (because you will), take notes. Map out exactly what helped you climb out. Next time, you’ll already know where the ladder is.
