The Sales Vault

A Purple Elephant, Gloria Estefan, and a Great Blog

Did you read the title to that blog? Now you’re wondering what those three things have in common, aren’t you? You hope this teaser doesn’t go on and on and on much longer. The first point Bill Farquharson wants to make in his blog about how to write a blog has just been been made. Now it’s finally time to read the others.

“A Purple Elephant, Gloria Estefan, and a Great Blog”… Isn’t that a fantastic title?

You can’t help but dive in to see what those three things have in common.

The truth is, nothing. There is no commonality.

I’ve lured you in and now you’re 40 words into my blog. Simply by coming up with a compelling title, I got your attention.

But what’s more…

…by keeping each paragraph short and adding a lot of white space, you are much more likely to read my blog than if I did what I’m doing now which is to just ramble on in one long sentence. In fact, I’ve probably lost a not-insignificant percentage of my readership instead of sticking to what was working: white space.

A great blog:

  • Is no more than 250 words;
  • Makes one singular point, not several;
  • Includes bullet points;
  • So that the reader;
  • Can scan;
  •  Your blog.

Back to the title…

My friend Al Lautenslager told me years ago how important it is to include a powerful and compelling title. Seriously, which would you rather read:

  • How to Write a Blog That Gets Read
  • Five Mistakes People Make in Their Blog
  • Why Your Blog Sucks
  • A Purple Elephant, Gloria Estefan, and a Great Blog

I’m coming up on 250 words, so I need to wrap this up.

Ideas for blogs can hit you at any time, so write down anything that comes to you. After that, follow these simple instructions and people will start looking out for your next brain dump.

That’s 250 on the button!

Boom!
