A couple years ago I was scheduled to be deposed. It was part of a case for which I was an expert witness. I was solid on my research and pending testimony, but the idea of being grilled by a lawyer put my stomach in knots.
Enter The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz’ long-time New York Times best-selling book. This is my go-to for talking myself off the ledge when uncertainty, stress, and anxiety arise. Here’s why:
#1: Be impeccable with your word
#2: Make no assumptions
#3: Take nothing personally
#4: Always do your best
Running my situation through this filter helps me isolate the real issue or come to the realization I have nothing to worry about.
In the case of the deposition, here’s my thinking:
Am I being impeccable with my word? Yes.
Am I making an assumption? Yes, again. I’m assuming it’s going to be difficult.
Am I taking something personally? No.
Am I doing my best? Yes!
It’s that last one which got me to realize I had nothing to worry about. No matter what the lawyer throws at me, I can only do my best – and so long as that is the case, I’ve done what I can.
First, read the book. It’s a game-changer. Second, use its wisdom to gauge the angst in your day. Third, focus on that four one. Doing so will make every aspect of your life better.
