The Vehicle Wrap Curse

Bill Farquharson sat at a stop sign behind a van with a beautiful vehicle wrap. In from of him was a car taking its sweet time before deciding what to do. What happened next is a lesson for all company drivers. Read about it in this week's blog.

In my small town south of Boston, three cars at a traffic light is considered heavy traffic.

I remember being third in line at a stop sign downtown. There was a commercial van in front of me and he was behind a Honda CRV.

It’s a law in Massachusetts that when you turn 80 years old, you must drive either a Toyota RAV4 or a Honda CRV. Further, you must drive 10 miles an hour below the speed limit, have one directional going at all times, and use time spent at stop signs to fill out your grocery list.

On this particular day and at this particular stop sign, the driver in the Honda took an in ordinate amount of time before deciding which way she wanted to go. The van and I waited and waited.

And waited.

I looked at the striking graphics on the van as I waited. The vehicle was beautifully wrapped and it gave the name of the house-painting company, complete with slogan, an illustration, and the company’s phone number.

The driver waited for the Honda to move, and I waited for the driver to lean on his horn.

But it never happened.

I’ll bet 30 seconds past with the three of us just sitting there. With every passing second, I became more impressed with the patience of the van driver.

I also became more impressed with the company he represented.

Your drivers can destroy your company’s relationship in an instant. Speed. Tailgate. Get distracted. Cut someone off. Boom, that vehicle wrap is suddenly all over social media.

I read somewhere the 12,000 people a day see a company vehicle. That’s a lot of opportunity to be a jerk behind the wheel. And these days, it doesn’t take much. So…

Make certain your driver understands something:

With great graphics comes great responsibility.
