How to Lighten Your Workload

Your task list is a graveyard for good ideas and during the day, you likely add to it over and over again. So does Bill Farquharson. In this week's blog, Bill tackles the issue and shows you how to make it just a bit lighter.

Between now and the time it takes me to finish this blog, I will have come up with at least one and probably two additional tasks. It’ll be something business or personal that just popped into my head, like:

  • Post today’s Vault workshop in Replays;
  • Fertilize the backyard;
  • Promote the “New to Sales” group on LinkedIn.

That’s what we all do, isn’t it? Write it down or forget it.

I just counted and found a total of 10 additional items added today alone.

10!

My guess is, your to-do list looks like mine. Some of the items are worthwhile, but a lot of them are just pie in the sky, “I wish I had the time, but I probably will never get to it” entries. All in all, we have dozens of “great ideas” clogging up the system.

Let’s eliminate them.

I want you to go to your task list and find five things you can eliminate. Organize them by date and kill five that have been sitting there since the day the earth cooled.

Delete them.

If you’re not willing to be that decisive, then write them down on a separate piece of paper and stick them in an envelope. Put a date on the envelope one month from whatever day you are reading this blog. If the day comes and you have not open the envelope, throw it out without opening it.

You might even want to do this with regularity. It would be good for you to shave off some items and lighten the load. Perhaps every Friday you look at your task list and trim the fat. Great idea, don’t you think?

To remind yourself, add it to your list of things to do.
